I wish I had a nickel for each time Ive been asked this question. I am, as Michelle has helped me make sense of, a Renaissance SoulI have a variety of interests and aptitudes. What I am figuring out (with a ton of help from a specific holistic mentor) is an alternate method of asking that million-dollar inquiry and of noting it. What sounds good to me is to ask, If you could do any activity you needed, what might you need that activity to resemble? What might you need to escape it? I can answer that! Gallup Q12 to manage your manager so you are given opportunity
Gallup Q12 to manage your manager so you are given opportunity Gallup Q12 for employees Manage your manager using the Gallup Q12 questions Gallup Q12 for employees This weekâs I want to blog about how we can use the Gallup Q12 questions so that you, as an individual contributor, can set yourself up for success. I believe that employees should take control of their careers. If we wait for our manager to get us promoted, give us a raise or talk about our successes, we could be waiting a very long time. Manager have large teams and their own careers to worry about. We shouldnât count on our manager to take care of our career. The Gallup Q12 questions can be used as a foundation to set individual contributors up for success. The Gallup Q12 questions are used by corporations to measure employee engagement. The premise is that an engaged employee is a productive employee, a happy employee and someone who will stick around. For reference, the questions are listed below and companies want their employees to answer each of the question in the positive. Gallup Q12 questions Do you know what is expected of you at work? Do you have the materials and equipment to do your work right? At work, do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day? In the last seven days, have you received recognition or praise for doing good work? Does your supervisor, or someone at work, seem to care about you as a person? Is there someone at work who encourages your development? At work, do your opinions seem to count? Does the mission/purpose of your company make you feel your job is important? Are your associates (fellow employees) committed to doing quality work? Do you have a best friend at work? In the last six months, has someone at work talked to you about your progress? In the last year, have you had opportunities to learn and grow? Gallup Q12 for new manager training A few weeks ago, I blogged about my perspective on how the Gallup Q12 questions could be used as a basis for new manager training. To be clear, the questions are not intended to be used as a new manager training course, they are intended to measure employee engagement. I believe these questions can be used as a foundation for: New managers who have NOT received new manager training New managers who realize they are probably NOT going to receive new manager training Individual contributors who want to become managers. Being able to lead your peers and answering positively to the Gallup Q12 questions will get your name in the hat and at least qualify you for promotion. If you fall into one of the above three bullets, that manager training post is here. Individual Contributors If you are an individual contributor and want to take control of your career, we are getting into the meat of the post. If you read the 12 Gallup questions as an IC and are NOT able to answer in the positive, there is a problem. Whether we believe it or not, your manager wants you to be able to answer the Gallup Q12 questions in the positive. Your managerâs behavior may not represent this intention, but if we want to be successful, we need to LOOK, SMELL and SOUND engaged. Put another way The employees that have their managers support and ARE successful appear engaged in their managerâs eyes. We are NOT going to wait for our manager to pay attention to us. We are going to take the initiative so we look, smell, and sound engaged. So, for those of you that are thinking: My manager hasnât come to me with any new opportunity I have a manager that doesnât care about me My manager hasnât asked me for my opinion We are going to change that. Gallup Q12 number 1 Do you know what is expected of you at work? You would be surprised how many people do NOT know what is expected of them at work. They THINK they know what is expected, but they donât really know. If you are a bank teller, you know that your job is to help people with their banking needs. Your responsibilities include: Cash checks Deposit money Withdraw money Help customers with safe deposit boxes All well and good. If we show up at 9:00 AM, perform the above and leave at 5:00 PM, we would think we are doing well. If we are getting the occasional customer raving about our service, we probably think we are doing great. Quantifiable results But do we know how many transactions we should be conducting each day compared to the rest of the tellers? Do we know if the rest of the tellers are closing out their tills to the penny at the end of each day? Or are they short or over in their receipts and if so, what is the banks average on accuracy when closing out the tills? Do we know if other employees are coming up with new procedures or modifying current procedures to save the bank time or money? If our manager is not sitting down with us and sharing quantifiable, number driven feedback with us, we really donât know how we are doing. What employees think and managers think can be two very different story lines. As an individual contributor with a manager who may not know how to engage their teams, we can take the initiative by turning question number 1 around. The initial question from the Gallup Q12 is: Do you know what is expected of you at work? We would ask our manager: âAm I performing to the expected level of performance and is there anything I should be improving on?â You are doing great isnt enough Donât settle for âYes, you are performing to the level of expected performanceâ. That is the easy answer that most managers will give. This cop out answer doesnât move you forward. We need to show that we are the engaged employee that WANTS to improve. Insist on feedback for improvement. If you really are perfect in every way and there is no feedback, ask for a raise or more opportunity. Asking for a raise will generate opportunities for improvement. The point being, we need to start the hard conversations that our manager may or may not thinking about, or worse, may not want to have. Gallup Q12 number 4 In the last seven days, have you received recognition or praise for doing good work? If you have NOT received recognition, then this can be a problem. We want our manager in the mindset that we are doing a great job. You want to do such a solid job, your manager takes notice and comments on our performance. We are NOT going to tell our manager that we want positive feedback on what we are doing. What we do instead is to update our manager on what we are doing. Updates usually generate a response and feedback, and this my friend is Nasty. The conversation Hey manager Mikey. Last week, I handled 25 customer transactions a day and balanced out my till to the penny all 5 days. This week, I handled 27 customer transactions a day and balanced my till to the penny all 5 days. Next week, I am shooting for 29 customer transactions. For my level of experience, am I on the right track? Is there anything else I could be focused on because I would like to learn about creating cashier checks. The point is that we are showing improvement and showing a desire to learn more. Some folks may think that this sounds braggadocio, but if you do this for 3 weeks and remain consistent, the reports will become routine in your managers mind and it will be hard to NOT see improvement. Gallup Q12 number 11 In the last six months, has someone at work talked to you about your progress? Most of us have probably not talked about their progress with their manager. Per my Nasty way, my thought is to make moves SON! Do NOT wait for your manager to come to you. We should take the initiative and schedule the appointment. You should bring the talking points. We want our manager to play the role of consultant to our plan of action. You do not want to put your manager into a position where they need to come up with a career plan. Our career should NOT be their responsibility. Our career is OUR responsibility. Again, this does not mean we are going to approach our manager and ask, âCan you tell me how much progress I have made in the last 6 months?â Its just a progress update What this should look like is a progress update. This update would generate feedback. Hey manager Mikey. I am currently a bank teller 1 and I want to be a bank teller 2 in the next 6 months. This is what I plan to do (this is the progress I plan to make) so that I qualify for bank teller 2. Learn how to process cashier checks and process 35 of them without errors. Learn how to open a safe deposit box account and process 20. Have 99.9% accuracy in closing out my till Train a new teller in opening and closing a till Just get your manager to agree to a list Your manager will agree or disagree with the list, but the goal is to negotiate a list that WOULD qualify you for your next opportunity. Forget about the timeline, just agree on a list and start ticking them off. Meet with your manager on a regularly scheduled interval and give them a progress update. The point is that we do not have to wait for your manager. If everyone on your team was doing this and getting promoted, your manager would look like a super manager. The point is, your manager will not be offended. As you can see, taking a pro-active approach and updating your manager on what you are working on, what you have done, and how it helps the company is more of a clarification for your manager. It doesnât have to be a braggadocio event for yourself. Take a look at the Gallup Q12 questions and leverage them to start a conversation so you can manage your manager. See you at the after party, HRNasty nasty: an unreal maneuver of incredible technique, something that is ridiculously good, tricky and manipulative but with a result that canât help but be admired, a phrase used to describe someone who is good at something. âHe has a nasty forkball. How Long Should Your Resume Be
To what extent Should Your Resume Be The one-page continue versus the two-page continue What number of Pages Should Your Resume Be Theres a deep rooted banter about whether size issues that influences work searchers: How long should your resume be? On the off chance that your resume is excessively short or scanty, spotters and employing supervisors will think you dont have a ton to bring to the table, says Peter Yang, New York Citybased fellow benefactor of the resume composing administration ResumeGo. On the other side, if your resume is excessively long and enlarged, perusers will probably get exhausted or irritated. Things being what they are, whats the center ground for composing your resume? While theres no immovable guideline, says Kim Isaacs, a broadly confirmed resume author and executive of ResumePower.com situated in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, your industry and level of experience can assist you with deciding whether your resume ought to be a couple (or more) pages long. When to utilize a one-page continue The one-page continue is perfect for passage level specialists, new school graduates, and the individuals who have a couple of long stretches of work understanding, Yang says. Moreover, you ought to consider a one-page continue if youre hoping to make a lifelong change and dont have a lot of experience applicable to your new objective. The speedier you can arrive at the point, the better, Isaacs says. Recruiting chiefs are occupied individuals, at times figuring out many applications. You get around six seconds of their consideration when theyre making their underlying fit-or-no-fit choice, says Jessica Holbrook Hernandez, president and CEO of Great Resumes Fast in Callahan,Florida. Things being what they are, how might you utilize your resume land and truly stick out? By being key with watchwords, quanitifying your accomplishments, and, in particular, keeping it succinct. Along these lines, your resume will establish a decent first connection with the selection representative, as it ordinarily fills in as your first purpose of contact when you apply to an organization. Also, a resume that is everywhere doesnt say much regarding your authoritative aptitudes, isn't that right? When to utilize a two-page continue That doesnt mean you need to pack the entirety of your experience on one page with a little textual style that you need an amplifying glass to peruse. Coherence and generally introduction should be figured in, as well. Most resume commentators would prefer to peruse an all around spread out, simple to-skim, two-page continue than a one-page continue that jams an excess of data on the page, Isaacs says. A two-page continue bodes well for some activity searchers, particularly the individuals who are further along in their vocation, with at least 10 years of significant professional training. The additional page might be expected to pass on the entirety of the basic data a business has to know, Holbrook Hernandez says. Remember, nonetheless, that the second page likely wont get as much consideration as the first, so its best to ensure youre utilizing the correct resume position (think: ordered versus practical). When to utilize a three (or more)- page continue A great many people accept resumes should fit on two pages max, regardless of to what extent youve been working. Be that as it may, likewise with all principles, Yang says there are a few exemptions. For instance, in the event that you work for the national government; youre a senior-level administrator with a long reputation of achievements; or youre composing a scholarly CV for an examination or logical position and have a broad rundown of distributions, talking commitment, proficient courses, licenses, or accreditations; at that point you may need to stretch out your resume to at least three pages. The last word on continue length At long last, the length doesnt matter very as much as the substance filling the pages. In the event that you can catch your capabilities on one page, amazing. However, in the event that it takes two pages or more, that is OK, as well. Ive had new graduates do well with two-page continues and top officials do well with just one page, Isaacs says. Simply recall: Your resume ought to be an elevated level glance at your achievements that tempts the employing director to need to find out additional. A resume resembles the duplicate on the back front of a book, intended to make you need to peruse the book, Isaacs says. Its not the entire book. Once youve made sure about the correct length for your resume, visit Monster to see whos recruiting. Have your resume looked at We get it; it very well may be precarious composing an expert resume that covers all your heavenly characteristics. Building Stonehenge Simple DIY Job
Building Stonehenge Simple DIY Job Building Stonehenge Simple DIY Job Top of the line authors have composed epic stories envisioning its starting points. A great many individuals run to it every year for its alleged supernatural and profound forces. An anecdotal musical crew even composed a critical tune about it in the faction film This is Spinal Tap. The antiquated Stonehenge landmark in Salisbury, UK, has entranced admirers and jumbled researchers and designers for a considerable length of time, principally in light of what isn't thought about it. Notwithstanding the fundamental inquiries of What is it?, Who assembled it?, and When did they fabricate it?, this incredible landmark has consistently had one of the best designing inquiries ever appended to it: How in the hell did they construct it? Cell based dated to around 2,500 B.C., Stonehenge was assembled some time before the approach of even basic building advances, for example, the wheel, pulleys diesel motors. Add to this the way that a great part of the stone utilized has been followed to areas of Wales almost 200 miles away, and you have the makings of one of historys record-breaking riddles. A One-Man Job? Appraisals of the labor expected to move the stones and afterward make the structure itself have changed throughout the years, yet all have been huge. In his novel Stonehenge, author Bernard Cornwell distinctively rethought a well known hypothesis, with the stones continued top of wooden sledges pulled by several bulls, with the last situating oversaw by many men over numerous years. Different speculations have included transportation via ocean, again with several men and groups of bulls to drag the stones to and from the boats. Stonehenge was manufactured well before the appearance of the haggle. Be that as it may, over the most recent couple of years, a man in Flint, MI, USA, has advanced another hypothesis with respect to what number of individuals should have been associated with the development of Stonehenge. His gauge, in view of the life-sized copies he has developed in his own lawn? One. The truth is out. W.T. Wally Wallington, resigned craftsman and development specialist, has demonstrated that the Stonehenge landmark could have been shipped, put, and made sure about by one man, in a generally short measure of time. Also, based on the video he has set on YouTube and on his site, The Forgotten Technology, which previously ran on The Discovery Channel quite a while back, it doesnt even show up such troublesome. It has been hypothesized that the development of Stonehenge may have included transportation via ocean using men and bulls to move stones from ships. Notwithstanding a keen wooden vehicle he created called a round street, which utilizes the force and weight of the stone to convey it quickly here and there along an undulating wooden street (and thus, possibly transport it overland rapidly), Wallington has built up a technique for turning, altering, and moving inconceivably huge articles that just makes eyewitnesses wonder on the off chance that they can accept their eyes. In any case, be guaranteed, its all dependent on standards of material science and building. I found a straightforward clarification for this, to move a square about the heaviness of a minivan, is place a stone underneath it, he says in the video. And once I balance on it, I can turn it. When he begins this monstrous square of stone pivoting with only straightforward wood handles and a little stone as a small support, it abruptly turns out to be extremely simple to envision antiquated individuals, encompassed by a lot of both of these materials, doing likewise. Be that as it may, to get the stone moving in forward movement, one more stunt is required. W.T. Wally Wallington. Picture kindness of W.T. Wallington/theforgottentechnology. You can see Ive got two handles on my switch, and I can put another stone on this [the opposite] side, he says. Now, each time I turn an a large portion of a revolution on each stone, I move the square on a level plane the separation between the stones. Incredibly, with this technique, he can move a one-ton square 300 feet for every hour by strolling with it, with every pivot being around one stage. Significantly more incredibly, this technique scales up to empower him to move a 19,200-pound hinder, the rough size of a Stonehenge section, without anyone else. At that point, helped by just his two children, he can get it into position to drop into the ground, raising the chunk into position by gradually stacking boards of wood, individually, underneath the stone, on either side of the support, until it is upstanding and can be tipped into the gap. Remaking Stonehenge Wallington is as of now during the time spent making his own Stonehenge, with one whole lintel-bested structure previously built and imagined on his site. This antiquated designing can be applied to the development of The Pyramids also: Wallington claims thatusing his procedures, he could assemble the Great Pyramid of Giza in 25 years, with just 640 laborers. Is the extraordinary puzzle of Stonehenge unraveled at that point? In all actuality short a time machine, we will never know how the occupants of ancient Britain built this incredible landmark. However, we do realize the innovation to execute this straightforward technique was accessible, it was fitting to the earth in which the individuals of the time lived, and it was unquestionably conceivable that a shrewd person could have had a similar talk Wally Wallington did those numerous hundreds of years prior. So this December 21, as the news reports are loaded with accounts of the current journeys made to the site to praise the Winter Solstice, and the marvel and puzzle of Stonehenges beginnings are by and by commended, you may go to the individual close to you and state, I know how they did it. It was simple Also, you very well might be correct. Cell based dated to around 2,500 B.C., Stonehenge was constructed some time before the appearance of even straightforward designing advances, for example, the wheel, pulleys ... diesel motors.

I knew that I had expertise, and could bring value to the equation, but nobody knew that, nor did they know me. My job search was a lot of push-marketing, and it was painful. Just as theyâre roaring in pain, a suited, booted, slick looking individual strides past them and bellows, âHave YOU been injured in the workplace?â While their adverts might be a bit shoddy, being an injury claim lawyer consists of more than just bellowing at cameras. In this hectic and busy arm of the law â" national newspaper The Guardian described the number of claims in the past few years as âmushroomingâ â" youâll be helping those who have been injured in the home or out on the street. The keys to success in personal injury claims But how can you break into a job in the personal injury claims market? First off, an innate need to help people should be at the top of your list. Much like a doctor or a nurse, you have to show a sense of compassion for the plight of the injured, and feel like youâll do the best you can to gain them compensation. In a sense, itâs about wanting justice for everyone. Next, itâs time to study, study and study a bit more. As with any other sector of the law, youâll have to cram for at least four years to gain a degree in Law. Itâs not a case that you can rest on your laurels, either without a first class honours, the finest firms will flat out ignore you. While youâre at university, make the most of your free time by taking on a few law internships. In all honesty, this is basically mandatory nowadays. As an increasing number of students figure out how to merge their extracurricular activities with their qualifications, the job market has grown into a prized bear pit. After youâve got your qualifications and a decent amount of experience under your belt, itâs time to try for the big scary world of full time employment. This is the tough part â" while any number of employers were willing to have an intern whoâd work for free, the story changes after you expect a decent wage. But in that raft of rejections, a sliver of an opportunity will present itself. Ultimately, the world of personal injury claim lawyers can be tough. But with the right temperament, qualifications and skill, youâll be in the perfect position to give those who have been unjustly injured a helping hand.

What are the Two Steps to a Great Job - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
What are the Two Steps to a Great Job - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The statement expressed in the title sounds so simple yet for some is difficult to achieve. So letâs together demystify the two steps for getting a job offer. The Résumé Because of the enormously large pool of job applicants nowadays, even a very good résumé may not get singled out when compared with the many outstanding résumés. Itâs a competition for sure, and only, say, five résumés might be considered for invitations to face-to-face interviews. So, how does one put together an excellent résumé? That depends: if you have good writing skills, you can draft a résumé and then have some people whose proficiency and judgment you trust review and edit it for you until it becomes excellent. Consult career coaches, human resources professionals, or recruiters. Hopefully, youâve developed good relationships with such people, who will agree to help by expressing their opinions. If you are not skilled with language, I suggest you seek a professional résumé writer who has performed work for others and brought them success. This is a good investment, since otherwise, youâre merely spreading around a noncompetitive résumé that brings no actionand you will never find out why. Many people fall into that trap, and they therefore lose time and of course the opportunity to make money. So, how does one know whether oneâs résumé is excellent? The answer is very simple: Excellent résumés get action. The rest donâtor do only very rarely. The Interview Congratulations! Your résumé was attractive and intriguing enough to persuade a hiring manager to want a conversation with you in order to explore your candidacy for an opening, competitively with a few others. Now the real competition starts. All of those who have been invited to interview stood out too and could potentially take the job, meaning that they have the skills for it. But the hiring manager has another need to satisfyand that is whether you fit and will be committed to the company. Ascertaining whether you fit is very much psychological on the part of the hiring manager, who is asking himself whether your future peers would accept you, whether you and he are aligned ideologically, whether his own boss would consider you a good hire, and whether you represent a promising investment. And there are other, similar questions, whose answers can be rather subjective. The hiring managerâs final area of vital interest has to do with whether you seem committed to the job. He wants to ensure (1) that you have potential for growth within the company, (2) that you wonât move to a competitor if the company goes through some difficult times and someone else is offering you a fraction more compensation, and (3) that you deliberately targeted this company as an employer. If you can convince the hiring manager that youâre the right choice, if you answer questions properly, and if you project positivity and energy, your chances for getting an offer are good. Good luck on your next job. Feel good about yourself. You deserve it.

10 tips for standing out in the workplace
10 tips for standing out in the workplace This post was written by an external contributor. Rene Germain talks us through how to stand out as an intern or new graduate in a professional environment. Standing out in the workplace as an intern or recently hired graduate can be tough whether in a small company or large multinational business, ensuring you make an impact is hard graft. Follow these ten tips and trust us, youll be top of the pile in no time: Dress for success People that dress well for work carry themselves with a certain confidence, and they bring that same energy to their work. Dressing well doesnât mean buying expensive and flash clothes; dress appropriately (according to your workplace guidelines) and wear things that make you feel good. When you look good, you feel good, and you do good! In addition to this, how you dress creates a perception of you, and a lot of the time thatâs all people have. Start on the right note by dressing for success. Become an SME Become a subject matter expert with regards to your role and the area you work within. When you become a mini-expert in something, you become the go to person, which reflects that you are trusted and have a reputation for knowing your stuff. Itâs also a great thing for you in terms of developing a deep understanding and being able to communicate that information to others. Becoming a subject matter expert takes time, but here are some tips: Ask lots of questions, especially to the people who did your role before you. Take advantage of online training modules if your company has them. Network with other people within your area but outside your team. This can be really good in terms of offering a different perspective. Once youâre confident, share your knowledge with the team. Present to them, train up some of your colleagues on your area of expertise, and if you can, create a beginners guide to make it easier it easier for the next person. Be known for something specific This is closely linked to the above but this time, more skill specific. Are you really good at fancy PowerPoint presentations, or are you an Excel pro? Are you a good communicator and can present well? Whatever it is, make sure people know! This becomes really useful, especially when trying to get projects outside of your day to day work. Positive attitude Not every day is going to be fun or exciting. Some days will be long and stressful, but your ability to remain positive and upbeat will really standout, and help increase the team morale. Diversity networks / company initiatives In the same way that universities have societies, most companies have networks. Some are sports related, others more diversity orientated, e.g. Womenâs network, Black professionals, Asian professionals, LGBT, Disability networks and more. Some of these networks may be firm wide, or organised according to regions or divisions. Try and get involved with some of these networks and advocate for them in your team. Get involved in networks you are genuinely passionate about, not just because you want to look good. Commercial awareness Demonstrating that you are fully aware of what is happening in your industry and how it may affect your company shows that youâre a broad thinker and have a genuine interest. You can demonstrate this by sharing the links to relevant articles with your team and briefly talk about new industry developments in team meetings. Create your own projects If you identify something that could be done better or that your team currently doesnât do, but you think they should, make it into a project for yourself. It will show that you think outside of the box, take initiative and youâre proactive. Offer to help If your colleagues appear super busy and stretched, offer to help them, even if you have no idea what to do. Itâs so much easier sometimes to do the work youre set, but helping out in other areas shows youâre a real team player and, actually, the work is usually way more interesting. Bring your authentic self to work Just because youre entering the corporate environment, it doesnât mean that you must now leave your true self at home. One of the few ways you can truly differentiate yourself is by being you, because the workplace is full of a diverse range of people from all different backgrounds, with different interests. Be excellent and work hard Be excellent at what you do. Deliver everything to the best of your abilities and to a high standard. Donât be afraid to get stuck into issues which are unfamiliar to you, as this is where youâll learn the most. So there you have it follow these tips and sashay your way to success. What to wear in my creative industry interview - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach
What to wear in my creative industry interview With the creative industry booming, it is almost impossible to keep up with industry trends and figures; let alone what to wear in the interview. Pulling off a sophisticated and stylish look is getting increasingly difficult with interviews becoming progressively varied. After the dot com bubble burst, we are finally starting to see the digital economy getting to its feet, with the emergence of e-commerce power houses such as Amazon and eBuyer. That leaves graduates with one question, what do we wear in the interview? The traditional suit has been relegated to the law and accountancy interview. Now, you can add a bit of your personal style to your interview and let them see your real personality. The Suit Although the suit is probably overkill for creative industries, it is always a matter of judgement. If the company provides cloud services to FTSE100 firms, then you should be seriously considering a full suit. It is all about what you are expected to do in your job. If, for example you are sitting behind a desk all day with little client contact, then dressing to impress may be slightly too much. However, if you are in a sales role, your success will depend on how your potential customers will see you; therefore it is important to look your best. Use your personal judgement, as this is what they will expect you to do once you get the job. Also, remember it may be slightly embarrassing to overdress to an interview, but you will severely hamper your chances of getting the job if you underdress. The Smart Casual The smart casual is a wonderful thing if you get it right. As a general rule of thumb, dress one grade higher than you would be expected to in your everyday role. One other tip; never wear jeans. It is to decisive amongst people who are likely to be interviewing you. Personally, if I was interviewing someone and they wore jeans, it would take a great candidate to win me back over. Donât make it hard for yourself, decisions are made within the first 30 seconds that you walk into the room in some cases, therefore avoid jeans at all costs. A shirt, tie and jumper are the magic combination in my opinion, especially for digital and creative industries. It gives the impression that you put thought into what you are wearing, judged that you need to look smart, but still show that you can fit in with your office workers. Accessorise Accessories are a way in which to get your personality across without wearing that yellow suit you got made for last Halloween. Shoes in my opinion are something you need to get right, much like the jeans, they may be decisive in first impressions. Make sure you wear some clean shoes, or maybe it is time to buy a new pair? House of fraserâs menâs shoes are great and you can get a nice new pair to make you feel more confident when walking into the interview room. People view tattooâs differently these days; therefore I wouldnât worry too much if you can see one popping out of your shirt. It may even create something in common with your interviewer, and get you off on the right foot. Overall, you have to remember that they will forget what you were wearing five minutes after you walk out of the room, therefore donât panic too much. If you look unprofessional however, then this may stick in their mind so simply remember the golden rules: Dress one level above what you would be expected to wear undertaking your everyday duties. Never wear jeans Make sure your shoes are polished and clean Allow what you are wearing to make you feel confident and act it

Do something different to find a job talk to people who cant help you -
Do something different to find a job talk to people who cant help you - Youâre looking for a job? When is the last time you tried a new strategy? A change of direction? Your job hunt is lasting longer than you thought? You know its a tough market, but youre frustrated and looking for answers? Heres another in a series of posts sharing ideas to help you âchange upâ your job hunting efforts. Be sure to read earlier posts in this series: Read materials targeted to employers Change your job search strategy search for companies instead of jobs I was recently speaking to a client about his search and offering him some tips to rev up his hunt. I said, Talk to people you dont think can help you. SilencePeople who CANT help?, he asked, incredulously. Absolutely! You never know where the next lead may be or where an important piece of information may be lurking. Talk to people who CANT help you with your search. Expand your net of networking contacts. You never know when a connector is in your midst someone who takes pride in knowing a lot of people and introducing them to each other. As part of my work, I keep a close eye on career and resume trends by reading books, blogs and keeping in touch with my advisory board of professionals in an array of industries. When Iâm not writing resumes, coaching, blogging and reading, in the spirit of âpractice what you preach,â I also frequently meet people for âinformational interviews.â I attend Chamber of Commerce meetings, visit close-contact networking groups and seek out an array of networking opportunities. It is amazing to me how our need for networking (as entrepreneurs and as job seekers) has spawned a whole industry of people for whom networking is actually their business! Iâve been to coffee with real estate professionals, a dentist, investment advisors, life coaches, travel professionals, vitamin sales people, photographers and a salesperson trainer, just to name a few. It never ceases to amaze me how much we have to share with each other, and the possible âtouch pointsâ between our businesses or our networks. Taking the time to meet these professionals offers me the opportunity to share information about my business, but more importantly, I have a chance to learn about programs, events and opportunities I might never have considered. I also try to share something that will help them and offer to be a resource. In a recession, it is even more important to expand our circles when job seeking. Some lessons: Never underestimate the possibility for really interesting common ground.à Some of the meetings Iâve least felt like getting up at 6 a.m. to attend have been the most productive in terms of what Iâve learned. Open your eyes to the opportunities! Seek out places to meet new people. Join an organization, a new health club or take a class. Google ânetworking opportunities, (your city)â and see what comes up! Then, donât just attend, be an active participant. Just because someone isnât in your field doesnât mean they donât have useful information for you. (Or you for them.) Our lives intersect in so many points. Think of someone you consider least likely to be able to share good information with you for your search. Meet for coffee. You may be surprised! I challenge you to engage ask questionsâ¦be able to explain who you are and what you do. Donât underestimate the value of every connection. Everyone knows someone who knows someone who knows something. Inserting yourself as part of the chain is a great step in the right direction! picture by lumaxart

Reading Rainbow Star Levar Burton Hates Asking For Money
Reading Rainbow Star Levar Burton Hates Asking For Money For those of us who grew up watching Reading Rainbow, Levar Burtonâs new podcast LeVar Burton Reads is intoxicatingly nostalgic. Instead of childrenâs picture books, Burton narrates short fiction by authors like Neil Gaiman and Haruki Murakami, complete with his buttery voice, where his words still cling to you like a trusty old blanket. But Burton hasnât forgotten about budding bookworms. His new company, âLevar Burton Kids,â sprung from a hugely successful Kickstarter launched in 2014 under the Reading Rainbow name. That crowdfunding campaign raised an incredible $5 million, with the help of over 100,000 donaters. He split with the brand in 2017, but continues to build out the âSkybrary,â an app that gives families access to hundreds of childrenâs e-books for $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year, on his own. Even with his DIY mentality, Burton doesnât enjoy asking people for money. Hereâs why. Iâve been listening to your podcast, and itâs crazy how comforting it is to hear your voice again. Is that creepy? People must tell you that all the time. Iâm so happy to hear you say that. That generations of adults who grew up on Reading Rainbow find just the sound of my voice a comfort is very cool for me. Especially in the times we live in. Is that why you started this podcast? For our sake? Iâve thought about it for a long, long time. My wife has been encouraging me to do something like this for years. And finally the popularity of podcasting, the low barrier to entry, and my desire to do something creative that was simply for me all came together. Short fiction is a genre of literature Iâve always loved. Last November, you and your business partner pitched your growth plan at the WeWork Creator awards in New York, and walked away with an $180,000 grant. Did you know you had that in the bag? No, the other 10 finalists in our category, were all very strong companies, some I had heard of, like Biolite, some I had never heard of. I didnât assume anything, and we were thrilled to be one of the money winning teams. What are you going to use the money for? Itâs going to help us retool our product so that we can reach more kids. It will help us make tweaks to the product, make us more accessible, help penetrate the school market, help diversify our product into the Spanish language, and forge partnerships in foreign markets. The problem weâre trying to solve is childhood illiteracy. Itâs a big, big, big mission. But weâre going to try. Youâve had a very successful career for a very long time. Was money ever tight? Oh yeah, absolutely. Early in your career? Early in my career, in the middle of my career, at the present time in my career. Look, when youâre the founder of a startup, money is always an issue, whether itâs your money, money youâve raised, or money people have invested in you. You donât like asking people for money? Oh thatâs the worst. There are few things more painful than asking friends for favors, or asking strangers for money. But people seem to want to give it to you. Are you a natural entrepreneur? It does not come easily to me, no. Iâm an artist by personality, Iâm not a businessman. Itâs a part of me Iâve really had to cultivate. But I have the good sense to surround myself with people who complement my strengths. As publishers shift their focus to ebooks, what does that mean for kids whose families canât afford a tablet? Or a personal computer? Is that something you think about? I think about this all the time. Look, television was the technology that we used in the â80s to reach kids. If you want to reach kids today, you need your content to be on the devices they want to be on. But you canât have content in the digital space without being aware of the digital divide. Iâm always thinking about how can we reach more children. And books shouldnât be a luxury item ⦠LB: No. they should not. They absolutely should not. I believe itâs part of the human birthright, literacy. The new season of LeVar Burton Reads podcast is out now.
